And on 25 December some Romans also celebrated the birthday of Mithras, who was the Persian god of the sun. The Anglo-Saxons of England also had a winter celebration. In December they celebrated the hopeful rebirth of the sun after dark winter days. So Christians began celebrating the birth of a different type of son – the Son of God – at the same time of year.
