Itwas fortunate forBritain that the struggle wasnot delayed forafew years, andthat there wastime forthe Punjaub tobecome well contented with ourrule before theoutbreak ofthe Mutiny; forhad thePunjaub declared against usat that critical period itwould assuredly have turned the scale, andthe work ofconquering India must needs have been undertaken anew.
