"Understanding Marxism" by William Henry Charles Eddy, published by Rowman & Littlefield Pub Incorporated. The book is a slightly edited version of the discussion course that Eddy wrote for his tutorial groups in the early 1950s and used for many years with great success to stimulate discussion and enquiry among his students. If Eddy’s untimely death had not prevented this, he would have wished to add a dialogue on more recent discussions and interpretations of Marx. Eddy, in the beginning of 1973 had no doubt that much of the latest 'Western Marxism' amounted to a remystification of Marx, to a retreat from his positions. But he did think too that the new Western Marxists had found some theoretical ways forward from Marx, e.g., in criticizing or rejecting his social monism.No study of Marx or Marxism can be complete. There is always much more to be said. What Eddy discusses here is important and self­ standing; it comes logically and historically before and not after the discussion of recent years. For the critical understanding of that discussion it is an important preliminary. Eddy himself would have wished nothing more than that his book might drive the reader on to further thinking and reading, but only after he had digested those central issues and arguments to which Eddy rightly draws attention and which he approaches with a worked-out philosophical position that provides an important safeguard against empty eclecticism and obscurantist confusion.
